The battle for the Valley Trophy is both a rivalry game and judgment day for offensive and defensive schemes. San Jose State and Fresno State traveled to the LA Coliseum this season, but they returned with vastly different game tape.
Fresno State arrived with traditional, heavy-set concepts and was ground into dust, suffering a humiliating 39-0 shutout. It ran a static, point-of-attack scheme against a defense loaded with elite athletes. It used condensed formations, telegraphed its intentions, and asked its offensive line to overpower physically superior opponents. It was archaic, predictable, and failed.
San Jose State forced USC into a chaotic, 60-minute fight and left with 26 points because Craig Stutzmann’s spread-and-shred offense doesn’t try to overpower stronger opponents. It outsmarts them and neutralizes their strength. San Jose State forced USC’s elite athletes to defend the entire field by utilizing extreme, sideline-to-sideline WR splits and lightning-fast tempo. Stutzmann’s scheme uses spatial geometry to neutralize strength mismatches. It leverages RPOs and choice routes to put the ball in the hands of playmakers in space before an elite pass rush can even reach the QB.
Fresno State’s defense will be stepping into a football centrifuge that will separate the defense at dizzying speed.
If Fresno State uses a standard base defensive alignment against San Jose State’s tempo without radically adjusting its pre-snap communication, it will be separated in Stutzmann’s centrifuge and forced to watch the scoreboard light up. San Jose State’s game film against USC proved that when a defense is forced to cover extreme width at a breakneck pace, athletes get exhausted, assignments get blown, and passing lanes bust wide open.
If San Jose State’s offensive line can hold up for just two seconds per passing attempt, which it successfully did against USC, its offense will shred Fresno State’s secondary in space.
Game film is the truth, and it proved that traditional, heavy-set strength is severely weakened in the modern era.
